Bastard Bros


1900-1919: Thomas Dench Bastard and John Kitely Bastard, known as Bastard Bros., operated an ice and cordial manufacturing business on Holden Street, Hindmarsh. In 1903, they moved to Susan Street. In 1907, J.K. Bastard relocated to Mt Gambier as an engineer. Edward Sydney Bastard briefly worked as a clerk before becoming a bank manager in Kapunda. T.D. Bastard continued the business solo until 1919, then joined Hausen & Co as secretary. T.D. Bastard passed away in 1931.

The Bastard family, offspring of John and Elizabeth Bastard (nee Dench), descended from Thomas Barnabus Bastard, who arrived in Adelaide in 1853. T.B. Bastard was known for managing the Adelaide City Baths and as the early licensee of the Earl of Zetland and Theatre Royal Hotel. J.K. Bastard was born in 1872 and died in 1947, T.D. Bastard in 1874 and died in 1931. Edith Mary Mitton Bastard (1867-1923) married Sydney Waldemere Lower, an aerated water manufacturer in Port Adelaide.
